Profit: Goal or Rule?

A while back, I got lunch with a man who I don't know particularly well, but respect. We got together primarily to talk business, though we also swapped stories and I caught him up on the whirlwind adventure my last few years have been. One line he said in that conversation was ringing in my head today:

"Profit isn't the goal, it's a rule."

Or to say it differently: Good businesses are profitable, the best businesses know it's not all about money.

For me, I feel that I've known for a while that there's a lot more to life than money. My issue is creating something of meaning and value for others that also supports me and my family. My goal isn't the "stuff" of wealth, but building businesses and ventures that provide for me, my family and the community is requiring me to learn the rules, models, systems and structures so that I can scale my life and focus on what matters. Isn't that the goal for most of us?
